Best Baltimore Places

Greetings from the great (depending on who you ask) city of Baltimore. While I am here I decided that I needed to stop by my favorite place to buy beer: The Wine Source. They have wine, liquor, and a HUGE variety of beer by the six-pack and by the bottle. If you aren't careful you can spend a a shit-ton of money without really trying. They have everything from Belgians to microbrews.

Beer I Bought:
  1. Otter Creek; Otter's Dubbel
  2. Dominion; Millennium Ale
  3. Kiuchi; Hitachino Nest Beer (matured in sake casks)
  4. River Horse; Oatmeal Milk Stout
  5. Southern Tier; Jah*va Imperial Coffee Stout ( cannot wait to try this one!!!)
  6. Arcadia Ales; Cereal Killer ( bought this because of the name honestly)
Updates to come on how these all go down!

I was defeated by a beer

Yes. I was defeated by a beer.Rogue Chipotle Ale.

I couldn't do it. The flavor just didn't work in my mouth. It starts out like a normal ale then BAM a weird smoky and spicy flavor came over my tongue and it didn't stop. It tasted like a smoked meat. I have not had meat in a long time, this may be why I couldn't handle it. A friend of mine also drank some, according to her, having it with BBQ or pulled pork would be good.Or maybe it was the odd combination of flavors that don't generally hang out on my palette.

Try it out, let me know what you all think.

Best Beer Bars in the World 2009

Best Beer Bars 2009

I stumbled across this list and 2 of my favorite places made the list.

1. Zeno's in State College, Pa (amazing beer selection and they have beer fests regularly)
2. Max's in Baltimore, MD ( retarded amounts of great beer. GO NOW!)

I still need to get to Monks. Next weekend I am actually in town this will happen.

places you should be drinking

Local 44. 44th and Spruce.

I know I have mentioned this beer hole but I felt that it deserves its very own post.

Why you ask? Well mostly because of the beer. Oh man the beer. I often struggle to find a beer I haven't had when out but at Local 44 there are always more beers on draft that I have not had than beers I have. That makes me very happy. And there is a large variety. IPA's, cask ales, stout, ect. So pretty much whatever your beer taste , they got it. If you aren't sure what to order, ask the bartender...he will lead you in the right direction. The pints can be a little pricey but still worth it.

Why else do I like Local 44? The kitchen is open till 12. And the jukebox is great. joy division, black sabbath? yes please.

Beer Consumed at Local 44:
  • Green Flash Bourbon Stout
  • Stone 12 yr Anniversary Stout
  • Rogue Black Brutal
  • Elysian Dragontooth Stout
  • Lagunitas Grarleywine
  • Sierra Nevada Smoked
  • Coniston Blue Bird Bitter
If you have not been to Local 44 I strongly suggest it. Wait. No. Demand it!

Beer of the Week

Beer number 3. Flying Fish Brewing Company. Imperial Espresso Porter. 8% abv.
( can you tell i like imperial ales)

This beer has all the lovely color of a dark beer without all the heaviness that goes along with most stouts and porters. It tastes initially like dark chocolate then the espresso hits your tongue. Reminds me of the Southern Tier Imperial Choklat Stout but with a little more sweetness. It started as their 10 year anniversary ale but because of the demand it has become a late -winter seasonal beer. I can certainly see why.

Roomie Opinion: don't like dark beer but I like this one because its not too heavy
Bottom Line: while not as good as the Southern Tier, this beer is certainly more available around here and it is darn tasty if you like a dark and sweet (but not too sweet) beer.

  • VooDoo Vader (9%) - Lucky 13 had this tall glass of dark goodness.

Philly Beer Bitch on the Road

I'm coming to you tonight from the lovely (ok not really that lovely) city of Baltimore. Planning on checking out The Brewer's Art.

Expect a full report tomorrow.

Beer of the Week

Beer Number 2. Southern Tier Imperial Choklat Stout.

I have had 2 beers now from Southern Tier Brewing Company. This stout and the Back Burner Imperial Barley Wine Style Ale and let me just say that this brewer is on the fast track to being one of my favorites. The Imperial Chocklat Stout is dark, smooth and finishes like a damn good dark chocolate which is due to the chocolate malt and the bittersweet Belgian chocolate it is brewed with.

I was worried it was going to be sweet. Turns out it wasn't! It isn't sweet at all which I believe is a great thing. Occasionally when drinking a beer that is sweet, the sweetness is good at first and then it becomes nauseating as the pint goes down.

JF Opinion: "Oh God!"Dark and delicious.
Bottom Line: Drink this beer now. I am.

tho turns out downstairs you can get a dead guy (rogue). i do love dead guys.

BrewPub Review. Woo!

Nodding Head Brewery and Restaurant on 1516 Sansom in center city was one of the first on my list of brewpubs to tackle. and i must say i was pleasantly surprised.

atmosphere: dark but not too dark, the booths are old church or like train station benches. pretty neat, not so much fun for a shorty like me. the benches made me feel a little bit like the little kid sitting at the grown up table.

Food: GET THE MUSSELS!!!!!!!!!!!! or the baked brie. (dont get the vegatarian stew its bland and kinda dull)

and now to teh most important part.

Beer.

ok so the pic isnt the best. from left to right the beers are as follows:
1. Grog (5.5%): english style brown ale. it is cask conditioned, therefore i love it.
2. BPA(5%): bill payer ale. if you like hops A LOT, this is the beer for you.
3. Wee Heavier (9.5%): strong scottish ale. very good. not amazing. it goes down problematically smooth.
4. Old Sot (10.5%): barleywine style ale. little malty , a lot awesome. then again i'm pretty sure i havent met a barleywine i didnt like.
5. Doc (4.75%) blonde ale. meh. too much of a floral..kinda reminds me of hoegarden. if you like citrusey ales. this is a beer for you.
6. Chocolate Stout: they used 26 pounds of freakin chocolate to brew this stout tho it wasnt as filling as i expect stouts to be.
7. George's Fault (9%): beligian style ale. its a golden ale of awesome. it has a damn sweet finish from all the honey it was brewed with. love it

favorite beer: Grog.

bottom line: get your ass there. all of you. a variety of beers for a variety of palettes and damn good food to boot.

The First Beer of the Week

Beer number 1. Samuel Smiths Organically Produced Lager Beer.

Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout was my first introduction to this brewery and that my dear friends is some damn good drinkin. This beer, however, was not so much. I mean its not bad..its just dull. no interesting finish, not much body, not much flavor, just meh.

Roomie Opinion: It's alright, kinda like Miller Lite.
Bottom Line: Was worth the $3.49 I spent on it but would not order it at a bar.

Beer Bitches Unite!

Hell yes, we can. Drink beer that is. This blog will devoted to just that...beer. tasty beer. I have just recently moved to the lovely city of Philadelphia and am on a quest to find the best places and pints this city has to offer. Any suggestions are welcome but I'm kinda picky...and don't you dare tell me where I can get PBR cheap...I'd rather be sober than drink that shit.

Stay tuned for my beer of week.
